Our Story

Legacy began in 1997 following the demise of the band Calluna which involved Mal Simms and Paul Burgess.

Joining Mal and Paul was Clare Sanders and Jules Bell. Legacy worked around the south coast of England building a following and gaining a reputation performing their blend of Traditional Acoustic music mixed with a little improvisation and original arrangements. Playing festivals and folk clubs, the band released their debut album in the summer 1998 followed by their 2nd album in 1999. At the end of 1999 Tim Cotterell replaced Jules.

Legacy went on to make further albums, performing up and down the country at many festivals, arts centres and folk clubs, and had successful tours in Ireland and Europe.
In 2004 Clare and Paul moved to the West coast of Ireland. With Mal and Tim remaining on the south coast of England the band went into semi hiatus performing only once or twice a year.

In 2011 Legacy invited Piper Nick Scott from the successful band ‘Last Night’s Fun’ to perform at a weekend of gigs, Nick is now part of the band when available and adds a whole new dimension to the sound.
September 2013 saw Legacy return to support Show of Hands at the South Downs Folk Festival. The band hope to find more opportunities to perform live in 2014 and beyond.
