Since their formation in 1997, Legacy have been through some dramatic and dynamic changes. Their current sound is a reflection of the many styles that have been brought to the band through each individual.
Their stance has never been one of complete traditionalism but one that
stretches folk music to its most outer limits, incorporating jazz, blues
and other world music's without the aid of alternative instrumentation.
The diversity of sounds created by using only traditional instruments
is what attracts so many different kinds of people to their music and
is why you won't find Legacy just playing in the folk scene. Their appeal
is across the board and it is not difficult to see why when you hear their
latest recording "Polly On The Shore".
As the eldest and wisest member of the band Mal Simms is a kind of bridge
between two worlds, the traditional and the contemporary. His knowledge
and enthusiasm for all types of music combined with his skill and understanding
of the folk world make him a valuable asset and an incredible vocalist
and Bodhran player.
Next in line at just over half the age is Paul Burgess. His rhythmic guitar
and mandolin playing are without a doubt the driving force behind Legacy.
His innate capability to play in any style you could care to mention is
what gives Legacy its foundation to be anything it wanted to be.
Clare Sanders is a convert to jazz and improvised music after many years
of classical training, which has without question left her with great
skill and versatility in handling her instrument. Her contribution to
the band is a refreshing blend of contemporary flute playing mixed with
a sympathetic understanding of more traditional styles.
Last, but by no means least is the amazingly talented Tim Cotterell, an
accomplished and much sought after musician. In the last five years Tim
has played in many bands in many different parts of the world and is able
to bring to the band a myriad of styles including traditional Irish, contemporary
jazz as well as music from Eastern Europe and America.
